I really was not expecting a line of storms to fire South the metro. The NWS radio went off I fired up GR3 and saw a line of cells shooting up to 35k feet heading NE at 40 into Dakota County. I grabbed some bags and jumped into the car. I took my netbook, I thought I had loaded all the drivers and software but, I was wrong. Had no data, no maps, no GPS(nothing worked, my regular laptop is retired to no more traveling it’s taken one too many drops/etc). Anyhow I jumped onto I35 and took Cty 42 East to Hastings, into Prescott(I know Wisconsin) then US 10 intercepting the lead cell following into Ellsworth. I watched the second cell pass some nice Tcu a little bit of CTC lightning and lots of rain. I believe I saw Mr. Stanga walking out of Subway in Ellsworth. The sirens were going off in the Prescott area although I am not sure why. I had NWS radio and I believe the warnings expired on them around that time.
I took the kids on a short ride down to the Minnesota River just South of me to check out the flooding. Crests are expected in about 4 days. We were going to follow that up with some disc golfing at Moir but, the MFA had an event and the course was way too crowded so we watched and chatted with the disc golfers for 20 minutes before heading home.
I briefly attended the 18th annual 2010 Ice Bowl Frisbee Golf Tournament. Tons of people showed up for the event, we helped out as spotters while I took a few snapshots of the action.
I took a brief stop at Swan Park in Monticello on our way to St. Cloud where a local resident feeds our local population of Swans from 1/4 to 1/2 ton of corn per day, an enormous expense which she pays for herself and relies on donations. I spent quite a bit of time speaking to many other friendly photographers where we exchanged some other tips and locations.
(for more detailed information see my March 15th, 2008 post)
The Swans were repopulated in the region after being run to extinction but, they lost their ability to migrate South so a number of feeding stations have been setup along the Mississippi in open water areas typically downstream from power plants. A number of attempts have been made to get them to migrate which included cutting off the feeding stations but, none have been successful as of yet.
I was meeting a group advising I would be late about 40 minutes. I setup for 5-10 minutes took a few quick shots then headed to Applebies for a late dinner.
